Aberavon Fighting Irish

The recent Challenge Cup match versus Blackbrook ARLFC of St Helens, was another milestone in the development of the Aberavon Fighting Irish Rugby League Club. The club was established to give the young people of Port Talbot and surrounding areas an opportunity to play rugby league, and the club viewed the fixture as an opportunity to bring the town together and remind people of the merits of this great game.

A large and vociferous crowd enjoyed the occasion in the winter sunshine at the Aberavon Green Stars RFC, and despite the defeat a great time was had by one and all, both on and off the field of play.

Clubs like ours would simply not exist without the ongoing and very generous support of local businesses, and as a club we are indebted to our sponsors - uppermost amongst those, the JES Group, who have been staunch supporters of what we are trying to achieve. A company that is fully invested in our town and has a belief in the potential of its people, and understands how sport can be a vehicle for social change and in building safer and better local communities.

Viv and Justin Johnson and colleagues at JES have been instrumental in the club's development and its exponential growth since it was reformed in 2021. In addition to our Wales Grand Final winning senior team, the club now has over 300 children young people registered as rugby league players. And in our Aberavon Fighting Irish Wolfhounds programme, we also have an additional needs mixed-ability offer, further demonstrating the club's commitment to being fully inclusive.

The future is bright. The future is Green, White and Gold.
